Who is Melissa Monteiro?

Melissa Monteiro is an experienced and well-established expert in the field of settlement, having gained experience across several community issues and causes. Her passion for community work was evident early in life as a pre-teen, and during her studies in India at the College of Social Work, where she gained a master’s degree in Social Work. Melissa displays genuine appreciation and concern about people, providing a wealth of support and mentoring to individuals, groups and communities.

Melissa has strategically navigated diverse environments, through her broad knowledge and skills in community development practice and consultation methods. Her strength lies in the ability to build solid and trustworthy relations with community workers, local governments and key leaders within diverse communities.

As the CEO of the Community Migrant Resource Centre, over the past two decades Melissa has mentored hundreds of individuals, community leaders and not-for-profit ethnic community organisations in Western Sydney. She has fostered over 200 collaborations and partnerships through staff that she leads. Melissa advocates on behalf of vulnerable client groups, representing their interests to all levels of government.

Chief Executive Officer

Community Migrant Resource Centre

Melissa has grown the Community Migrant Resource Centre (CMRC) from a small community organisation to a medium sized resettlement service for migrants and refugees in the Western and the Northern Regions of Sydney.

She has demonstrated a wide-ranging level of experience by growing the organisation with an original operating budget of $149,000 to $7 million dollars in 2016.

The CMRC employs now over 80 staff and provides settlement services that assist over 27,000 newly arrived migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants in the Western and Northern Sydney regions.

2019 Winner

Impact 25

In 2019 Melissa was an Impact winner and recently , Melissa was chosen as the Judges Choice Award winner in the Collaborator category for the Pro Bono Australia Awards. She has contributed to the development of the ‘Guide to Employment for Skilled Migrants’ in Australia and has initiated the Annual Inspiring Change Women’s Conference in Sydney. An astonishing 28,300 people voted in this year’s awards and out of the 150 nominees Melissa was voted into the top 25.

The judges panel agreed that that with an issue as layered and complex as immigration Melissa developed a deep and thorough understanding of what policy was needed and developed innovative services that wrapped around the recipients in a way that acknowledged them deeply. Her work was acknowledged as intensely collaborative evidenced by the broad coalition of organisations she is a part of and has connected with.
